Green Cell UPS 600VA 360W

My old APC Back UPS ES-400 230V was dying, the buzzer started to make noise randomly and the battery was (near) dead.

The old APC served as an UPS for my Synology systems =>DS918+ and DS116. Now that APC UPS can’t be used anymore it was time for an replacement.

Budget was none 😉 so I decided to go for the (near) cheapest option… The only thing on my wish list was an USB connection to my Synology NAS for an safe shutdown during an brownout/power outage.

I went over the my favorite (local) hardware web-site (https://www.informatique.nl) where I found the Green Cell UPS01LCD power supply for only € 55.

This UPS is an 360W unit, which should be more than sufficient for my use case (in case of an power outage => Syno’s should go for an safe shutdown).

The only question I had in mind was… Is it compatible with my Syno’s?

Since GreenCell (GC) is not listed on the Synology compatibility list site => https://www.synology.com/en-global/compatibility?search_by=category&category=upses it was a bit of an gamble.

After I received the GreenCell UPS unit, I’ve hooked it up to my gear (the mains and my Syno’s).

Fortunately the Synology DS918+ detects the GreenCell (battery level) just fine (although no make nor model is detected):

Now I’ ve to test the unit and syno’s on an power outage and this is detected just fine by the Synology DS918+, so on this power outage the NAS goes for an safe shutdown and everything works as expected

The neat thing is that the Synology DSM has an network UPS server build in for usage with an second NAS (in my case the DS116):

After enabling the UPS network server on the DS918+ and connecting the DS116 to it both devices will go for an safe shutdown in the event of an power outage (make sure you also keep your network powered, else the second Synology NAS will not receive the shutdown command).

Conclusion:

I’m happy with my purchase, the Green Cell Uninterruptible Power Supply UPS 600VA 360W with LCD Display | EU VERSION | 2x Schuko Sockets is cheap and does the job just fine and is compatible with the Synology NAS systems.
